The OPAK PHILOSOPHY
"With the rapidly changing climate of our globe and our oceans, it is crucial now more than ever to inspire and educate future generations to become strong environmental leaders."
Youth today are faced with the harsh reality of environmental impacts created by the neglect of previous generations. With the rapidly changing climate of our globe and our oceans, it is crucial now more than ever to inspire and educate future generations to become strong environmental leaders. Many public schools in the United States have strong science curriculum, but some lack two major components that we strongly believe in: hands on experiences and communication skills.

Authentic hands on experiences are crucial in developing a student’s connection with science and nature. While the development of strong communication skills will allow them the freedom to express themselves and to advocate for the environment (or whatever they choose).
Ocean Protection Advocacy Kids, Inc. (OPAK) has developed a unique marine science curriculum that uses these two major themes to empower youth to become both curious scientists and creative environmental advocates.
Our goal is to bring this program to as many elementary and middle schools as possible at little to no cost. We provide hands on marine science experiments, games and activities that are designed to encourage students to fall in love with nature and to develop a deep curiosity to keep learning. We teach as many programs as we can at local beaches and marshes, or anywhere outside. For most students just being in close contact with nature is an incredibly empowering experience.
With every program that OPAK conducts, we incorporate an environmental advocacy project to help foster communications skills. Instead of having students just write a speech to recite to the class, we encourage them to come up with ideas to advocate for the environment through art. For many children art is a very natural form of expression. Through music, performing arts, visual arts, and creative writing, OPAK guides students in creating a group project using their new acquired knowledge and skills on how to protect the ocean.
The best part about this project is that it is entirely hand crafted by the students themselves. In conclusion, OPAK students will come together in finding the root cause of the environmental challenges faced by our oceans and will find solutions for sustaining a healthy marine environment for themselves, marine life and future generations.
